Women's Basketball Back on the Road Against Ball State Saturday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team begins a two-game Mid-American Conference road trip on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Ball State University.

LAST TIME OUT
The Western Michigan women's basketball team earned a season sweep over Akron with a 79-71 win over the Zips on Saturday, Jan. 25 inside University Arena. 

Western Michigan held the advantage in the shooting category, going 27-of-56 (48.2 percent) from the field with an impressive 36.8 percent (7-of-9) mark from three-point range. The Broncos shot earned 15 points off Akron turnovers and poured in 18 points off the bench while limiting the Zips to a 28.6 percent mark from long range and 44.6 percent from the field.
 
Each Bronco that saw playing time in today's contest scored at least five points, with five of seven racking up double-digit numbers. Leighah-Amori Wool led the squad with 21 points, two shy of a career-high, adding a team-high eight rebounds with four assists. Jordan Walker and Chelayne Bailey each tallied ten points, Walker with a new career-high nine assists on the day. Breanna Mobley fell just shy of a double-double but recorded 15 points with six rebounds.  Chelayne Bailey was the fourth Bronco starter to score in double figures with ten points and a team-high three steals. Off the bench, Reilly Jacobson added 12 points, while Maddie Watters went 2-of-4 from long range to bring in six.  .
 
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan heads into Wednesday's contest with a 4-3 record nearing the halfway mark of conference play, averaging 69.7 points per game and 39 rebounds. The squad is led by Jordan Walker and Breanna Mobley. Walker has led the team in scoring this season with 14.7 points per game, while Mobley averages a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.6 rebounds. Chelayne Bailey leads the charge in the assist game with 64.
 
COUNTDOWN TO 1000
Senior Breanna Mobley has the chance to hit a unique Bronco milestone this season. She currently holds second place in the individual career records for rebounds with 999 and counting, and became a member of the 1,000-point club against Miami on Jan. 20, 2018. If she tallies at least 1,000 rebounds this season she will become the second ever Bronco to reach both 1,000 points and rebounds, alongside former WMU player and coach Pat Charity, who hit the milestone in the 1977-78 season.

SERIES HISTORY
The Cardinals lead the all-time series with Western Michigan, holding a 44-39 advantage with a 26-15 record on their home court. Including two wins last season, the Broncos hold the advantage over the last three meetings from in 2019 and 2018, one of which took place in Cleveland at the MAC tournament.
 
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State currently holds a 13-7 record with a 5-3 mark (third) in the MAC West division. They finished the nonconference season 8-4 under eighth-year head coach Brady Sallee. The Cardinals head into Saturday's game having dropped their most recent contest to Kent State by a one-point margin. They are led by Oshlynn Brown in scoring (13.3 points per game), rebounding (9.8 per game), and steals (28). Oshylnn Brown was named to the preseason All-MAC team and has earned Player of the Week accolades multiple times throughout the season.

LAST YEAR IN THE MAC
Last season, the Broncos finished 4-14 overall during Mid-American Conference play, finishing fifth in the MAC West standings. They ended their season in the first round of the MAC Tournament, losing a hard-fought battle to Northern Illinois, 70-69. WMU opened the conference season with an 84-82 win over Bowling Green before snapping a seven-game losing streak with their 71-68 win against Eastern Michigan in February. The Broncos averaged 61.8 points per game, 32.4 rebounds per game and 12.0 assists per game. 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE
Redshirt senior Breanna Mobley is averaging a double-double this season with 13.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She ranks 16th in the MAC in scoring and has held the lead rebounder spot since November 26.
