Broncos Begin MAC Play at Home Against Ohio

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Road to Cleveland begins for the Western Michigan men's basketball team as the Broncos host Ohio in their Mid-American Conference opener on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4:00 p.m.

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan begins conference play with an overall record of 7-6 and is coming off a 95-62 loss at No.14 Michigan State on Sunday, Dec. 29. The Broncos seven non-conference victories were the most since securing eight wins during the 2017-18 campaign.

MACtion at Home
Under head coach Steve Hawkins the Broncos have been dominant at home during MAC play, posting a record of 105-37.

Home Sweet Home
The Broncos are 5-1 inside University Arena this season for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. With a win, WMU can secure its best start at home since going 7-1 during the 2014-15 season. At home, WMU is averaging 80 points per game and an average margin of victory of 18.2 points.

Flowers Blossoming
Junior guard Michael Flowers leads the Broncos and ranks second in the MAC at 17.1 points per game. Flowers' 222 total points during non-conference play is the 16th most by a Bronco under head coach Steve Hawkins. The Southfield, Mich., native has scored in double figures in 16 straight games dating back to last season.

Freshman Finding His Way
Over the past five games freshman B. Artis White has averaged 7.4 points and 3.0 rebounds while ranking second on the team with nine assists. Against Michigan State, White led the team with 12 points to go along with a career-high six assists.

Protecting the Ball
The Broncos are one of the best teams in the MAC and NCAA in protecting the ball, ranking second in the MAC and 24th in the NCAA with just 11.5 turnovers per game.

Scouting the Bobcats
Ohio heads into Saturday's contest with an overall record of 8-5 and has lost two of its last three contests including a 63-55 loss to Campbell on Sunday, Dec. 29. The Bobcats are led by the trio of Jason Preston, Ben Vander Plas and Jordan Dartis, who are each averaging in double figures.
