Broncos Host Akron Saturday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team seeks another January win against Mid-American Conference foe Akron University on Saturday, January 25 at 2 p.m. inside University Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos suffered a 73-62 conference setback on the road versus Bowling Green State on Wednesday.
 
Despite battling back against the Falcons for the majority of the contest, the visitors closed out the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Broncos 11-1 in the final minutes to seal the victory. The contest saw ten lead changes and was tied seven times, but Bowling Green kept the advantage, leading the charge for 28 minutes of the game. The Brown & Gold shot 23-of-62 (37.1 percent) from the field and 7-of-25 from three-point range.
 
The WMU offense was led by double-digit scoring from four of five starters. Breanna Mobley led the squad with 17 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double. Leighah-Amori Wool and Jordan Walker each added 12 points, Wool with seven rebounds and Walker with four. Grad transfer Chelayne Bailey added 11 points and eight rebounds with a team-high seven assists and four steals.
 
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
The Broncos finished the nonconference portion of their season with an 8-4 mark, including four wins on the road. They are currently led in scoring by redshirt sophomore Jordan Walker, who is averaging 16.1 points per game, a mark that also earns her a spot at fifth in the MAC. Redshirt senior Breanna Mobley is averaging a double-double on the season with 13.6 points per game and 10.5 rebounds. She has held the top rebounding average spot in the conference since early November and is nearing 1,000 career rebounds to go along with a previously-earned accolade of 1,000 career points. WMU averages 70.9 points per game with 40.7 rebounds, led by Walker and Mobley. They currently sit at second in the MAC with a +2.20 rebounding margin and are third in offensive rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY
The series between Akron and Western Michigan has the Broncos leading with a 32-9 all-time advantage, including wins in seven of their last ten meetings. Their record at home against the Zips stands at 18-2, their only losses coming in 2019 and 2011. Most recently, Western Michigan pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback versus Akron on January 8, earning the win by a score of 56-51. 

SCOUTING THE ZIPS
Akron heads into its second season under head coach Melissa Jackson, following up a debut season that saw the Zips 16-15 overall and 7-11 in the MAC. They head into the contest with a 9-8 overall mark and having won their most recent MAC contest 70-62 againt Buffalo to move to 2-4 in the conference. Akron is paced by Haliegh Reinoehl and Jordyn Dawson with 13.6 and 13.3 points per game. The pair also leads the rebounding squad with 7.3 and 6.8 per game, respectively.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
The Broncos are 5-2 on the season when playing at University Arena. Some of their best averages of the year so far have come during home contests. Over seven games hosted, they averaged 81.3 points and 43.5 rebounds, with 43 percent field goal shooting and 29 percent from beyond the arc.

COUNTDOWN TO 1000
Senior Breanna Mobley has the chance to hit a unique Bronco milestone this season. She currently holds second place in the individual career records for rebounds with 993 and counting, and became a member of the 1,000-point club against Miami on Jan. 20, 2018. If she tallies at least 1,000 rebounds this season she will become the second ever Bronco to reach both 1,000 points and rebounds, alongside former WMU player and coach Pat Charity, who hit the milestone in the 1977-78 season.
