Men's Ice Hockey | January 24, 2020
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Western Michigan hockey senior forward Hugh McGing has been named a candidate for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award.
McGing is one of 20 NCAA men's ice hockey student-athletes, who excel on and off the ice, to be selected as candidates for the prestigious award.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The Chicago, Ill., native currently leads the Broncos in scoring with 17 points on four goals and 13 assists in 21 games played this season. In his career he has played in 133 games, tallying 99 points on 37 goals and 62 assists. McGing is a three-time NCHC All-Academic Team selection and boasts a 3.22 GPA in biomedical sciences.
McGing, a St. Louis Blues draft pick, was a Second Team All-NCHC selection last season after recording 30 points on 16 goals and 14 assists. He was an assistant captain on the team last season before taking over the role for his senior season. As the captain he leads the team both on and off the ice, including this summer when the team helped out Kalamazoo Habitat for Humanity to clear out properties for construction of new homes for the less fortunate in the community.
McGing is the lone representative from the NCHC on the list this season.
From the list of 20, a national committee will select 10 finalists for the award in February.
