KAMALAZOO, Mich. -Â The Western Michigan gymnastics team concludes its three-match road swing by traveling to Eastern Michigan for a 6 p.m. Friday contest. The Broncos are looking to improve to 3-0 in dual meets and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference competition.
Friday's contest will be streamed on ESPN3 with Joel Godett and Ashlee Buhler on the call.       Â
A win versus EMU would mark Western Michigan's first 3-0 start to dual competition, and 2-0 beginning to MAC action, since 2013.
Last weekend, the Broncos earned their first victory at Northern Illinois since 2012 with a 193.900-192.775Â victory versus last year's MAC champion Huskies. While Northern Illinois won at least a share of the individual title in each event, WMU's depth proved to be the difference. Senior
Amelia Mohler turned in one of the top performances of her career, tying for the top spot on the beam and finishing tied for second in the bars. Mohler helped seal the victory by nailing a 9.850 on the beam during the final rotation. She was the team's sixth and final competitor in the event.
Last year, WMU faced the Eagles three times and went 1-2. The first meeting between the two came January 18, 2019, at the Northern Illinois Triangular with EMU topping the Broncos, 194.300-192.000. At Eastern Michigan on February 8, the Eagles beat Western Michigan, 194.850-193.725. The Broncos earned a win in their home finale, downing Eastern, 194.650-193.950. In that contest, Western Michigan started the meet with a solid 48.750 on the vault and scored a season-high 49.050 on the uneven bars in the second rotation. WMU registered a 48.225 on the balance beam and finished the meet on floor exercise with a 48.725.Â
Entering the fourth week of the 2020 season, the Broncos are fourth in the MAC in average score with a 193.658. EMU is slightly ahead in second at 194.525. Bronco freshman
Ronni Binstock begins the week in ninth in the league on the floor, averaging a score of 9.808. As a team, WMU holds its highest place in the conference on the floor and bars, sitting third in both. The Broncos are averaging a 48.583 on the floor and 48.333 on the bars.
Following Friday's competition, the Broncos return home to host Bowling Green at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 2.
