KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan gymnastics team springs into Mid-American Conference competition Friday by traveling to Northern Illinois for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Last year, the Broncos went 1-1 versus the Huskies, winning at home and falling on the road.
WMU heads into the weekend looking for its first win at Northern Illinois since a 194.575-193.350 victory on January 22, 2012. The Broncos are also looking for their second consecutive season starting MAC competition 1-0 after last year's NIU triumph.
Last weekend, WMU placed fourth at the Arizona Quad Meet, totaling 191.800. The Broncos are averaging 193.538 points per meet this season, tied for 42nd in the country. The floor is where Western Michigan is ranked highest nationally, averaging a 48.713, good for 33rd.
Individually, junior
Stacie Harrison was the top Bronco performer last weekend, claiming second on the floor with a 9.850. The performance was the highest floor score of the campaign for the Broncos. JuniorÂ
Morgan Spence tied for third on the floor with a 9.825.
In the overall scores at Arizona, freshmanÂ
Charlotte Tishkoff finished fourth with a 37.925 while classmateÂ
Ronni Binstock finished fifth with a 37.800.
In 2019, the Broncos opened the campaign with a 195.075-193.950 victory against the MAC preseason favorite Huskies. WMU took first in all four individual events with Spence claiming the bars title with a 9.875. A week later, Western Michigan suffered a 194.675-192.000 setback to NIU in a tri-meet with Eastern Michigan. Harrison had the Broncos' top overall finish in the tri-meet, tying for first on the uneven bars with a 9.825.
The Broncos continue road action next Friday, January 24, with a 6 p.m. meet at Eastern Michigan.
