2019 Hall of Fame Spotlight: Bill Horn - Ice Hockey

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics will induct the 2019 Hall of Fame class on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Fetzer Center. The inductees will also be honored the following day on Saturday, Sept. 28 during halftime of Western Michigan football's game against Central Michigan. This week www.wmubroncos.com will take a closer look at each of our inductees: Shawn Faulkner (football), David Gennero (men's tennis), Frederika Girsang (women's tennis), Bill Horn (ice hockey), Shaylen Jackson (volleyball), and Jeff Zylstra (men's track & field and cross country).

Bill Horn starred for the WMU hockey team from 1985-89. Horn made an immediate impact as a freshman, setting the single-season record for wins with 25. In that season he helped the Broncos to their first Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Championship. Horn was named the MVP of the tournament also helping the program reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time. In addition to his MVP honors he earned ACHA Second Team All-American honors. He earned Second Team All-CCHA honors for the 1986-87 season and was twice an All-CCHA honorable mention selection. Horn went on to win 71 games in his career, which is still the program standard. He also holds the program record for career minutes played with 7,933:28 and single-season win percentage at .833 (1985-86). 

Q&A With Bill Horn

Q: What was your reaction when you found out you were being inducted?
I was very excited and grateful. It was far from my mind to be in the HOF and that it is a blessing. It is truly delayed gratification. 

Q: Do you have some favorite memories from your time competing at WMU?
I was driven to play as soon as I arrived at Western. The CCHA Championship and the GLI championship are great memories both at Joe Louis. 

Q: What has life been like for you since leaving Western Michigan?
I played professional hockey in North America and coach youth hockey and train goaltenders via Horn Goaltending. I currently reside in Raleigh, N.C.
