INDIANAPOLIS -- Western Michigan hockey's Hugh McGing has been named a NCAA Statistical Champion for short-handed goals.
McGing finished the season with three short-handed goals, tying with eight other players in the nation that he shares the honor with.
The St. Louis Blues' draft picked netted his first shorty of the season in a 7-3 win over Niagara. The second came in a 3-1 win over No. 4/3 Denver on Jan. 25. McGing's tally gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead early in the second period. His third came in a 4-2 win over North Dakota at Lawson Ice Arena on Feb. 16. That goal sealed the win over the Fighting Hawks, pushing the lead to 4-2 late in the third period.
McGing is the second Bronco to lead the nation in short-handed goals, joining long-time NHLer Mark Letestu. Letestu had five short-handed goals in the 2006-07 season and went on to lead WMU in scoring and be named the Central Collegiate Hockey Conference Rookie of the Year.
Bronco Hockey also claims a statistical champion in points per game in its history. In 2000-01, junior forward Mike Bishai led the nation with 1.84 points per game, amassing 68 points on 23 goals and 45 assists in 37 games.
The last NCAA Statistical Champion in any sport by a Bronco came in 2015 when WMU football defensive backs Donald Celiscar and Ronald Zamort both led the nation in passes defender per game for the 2014 season. WMU had three that year, with men's soccer midfielder Sean Conerty leading the nation in assists per game at 0.67.
