OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan hockey team snapped its three-game losing streak, beating Miami 5-1 on the road at Steve Cady Arena on Friday night to secure home ice for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Quarterfinals.
The 12th-ranked Broncos (19-13-1, 12-10-1-1 NCHC) picked up goals from Corey Schueneman, Colt Conrad, Lawton Courtnall, Paul Washe and Wade Allison on the night. Conrad also had two assists for a three-point night, while Dawson DiPietro had three assists and senior forward Jade McMullen tallied two helpers. Senior goalie Trevor Gorsuch made 22 saves to pick up his 17th win of the season.
WMU took an early 1-0 lead on a goal at 9:11 in the first period. A Western Michigan power play had just ended when McMullen found the senior captain at the center point. Schueneman fired the puck past RedHawk goalie Ryan Larkin and into the net for his second goal of the season. DiPietro tallied an assist on the goal, his ninth of the season.
Conrad's ninth of the season pushed the lead to 2-0 just 3:41 into the second period on a power play goal. Conrad entered the zone after picking up a pass from DiPietro and ripped a shot past the glove of Larkin and into the top-right corner of the net. Schueneman also picked up an assist on the eventual game-winner.
The RedHawks got on the board at 13:59 in the second period on a goal by Phil Knies. Knies got the puck in transition and put a shot on net from the left circle that just trickled past Gorsuch and into the net.
WMU put the game out of reach early in the third period. Courtnall banged in a rebound on a shot by Cam Lee to push the lead to 3-1 at 1:53. Conrad picked up his first assist on the night on the goal.
Just 48 seconds later Washe punched in a goal on a one-timer in front of the net to put the Broncos up 4-1. Jamie Rome provided a hit in the Miami zone that caused a turnover. The puck was scooped up by McMullen and he found Washe in the slot for his fourth goal of the season.
Miami pulled the goalie with 8:00 left to play and Allison found the empty net at 7:29, set up by Conrad and DiPietro.
Western Michigan narrowly outshot the RedHawks 24-23. The Broncos finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while holding MU scoreless on six power plays.
