Allison Scores a Hat Trick as WMU Sweeps Miami

OXFORD, Ohio – Wade Allison netted his third career hat trick as the 12th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team routed Miami, 6-1, to compete the season sweep of the RedHawks on Saturday night.

It's the first season sweep of four games by the Broncos (20-13-1, 13-10-1-1 NCHC) over MU since the 2013-14 season.

Allison added an assist for a four-point night, while linemate Colt Conrad had a goal and three assists to join him with four points. Dawson DiPietro had a goal and an assist for two points, while Corey Schueneman also had a multipoint night with two assists. Trevor Gorsuch made 22 saves to earn his 18th win of the season.

Allison got the Broncos on the board very early, just 57 seconds into the game on his sixth goal of the season. Luke Bafia chipped it up to DiPietro to start a 2-on-1 and DiPietro passed it through the slot to Allison on the right side for a tap-in goal.

DiPietro was on the receiving end to give WMU a 2-0 lead at 13:54 in the first period. WMU was on the power play and Conrad threaded the needle through traffic to find DiPietro at the back post for his seventh goal of the season.

Ethen Frank got the scoring started in the second period for Western Michigan, netting his 15th of the season to give WMU a 3-0 lead at 5:10. Frank created a turnover and skated down the ice to fire a rocket past MU goalie Ryan Larkin.

Minutes later Conrad scored with a snipe on the power play from the left circle to push the lead to 4-0. Conrad won the draw to open the faceoff and Allison tapped it back to him. Conrad dangled around a few RedHawks and kept the puck from going offside before firing it high-glove side on Larkin and into the net for his 10th goal of the season.

Allison channeled the famous lacrosse-style goal scored by Mike Legg in the 1996 NCAA Tournament for his next tally at 13:57. WMU was on the power play and Conrad found Allison behind the net. The junior forward picked the puck up with his stick from behind the net and tucked it into the net for his seventh goal of the season. Conrad picked up his team-leading 25th assist, while Schueneman added his second of the night and fourth point on the weekend.

Miami broke up the shutout bid just 3:13 into the third period. Ben Lown, who hit the post twice in the second period, scored from the right circle to cut the lead to 5-1.

Allison completed his hat trick 57 seconds later, beating backup goalie Jordan Uhelski from the right circle to push the score to 6-1. Conrad tallied his third assist of the night and freshman defenseman Jared Kucharek also picked up a helper on the goal.

WMU outshot MU 32-23, including a 13-3 advantage in the second period. The penalty kill stayed perfect on the weekend, going 9-for-9 in the series after a 3-for-3 night. The power play finished the night 3-for-5.

Western Michigan must wait for the end of the Denver and Colorado College game to end before knowing who it hosts next Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) for the NCHC Quarterfinals. Tickets are on sale at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets and by calling 1-888-4-WMUTIX.
