KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 12th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team dropped game one of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Quarterfinals at Lawson Ice Arena against Colorado College, 2-1, on Saturday night.
WMU's lone goal came from Drew Worrad just 2:04 into the first period. Josh Passolt kicked the puck across the slot to Worrad in the bottom of the left circle and he spun and fired it into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Colorado College tied it up at 11:57 in the first period on a goal by Mason Bergh. A Bronco defenseman fell down in the neutral zone and it created an odd-man rush for the Tigers. Troy Conzo found Berg in the slot and he skated in and put it between Trevor Gorsuch's legs.
After a scoreless second period Erik Middendorf gave Colorado College the lead on a power play goal at 6:42 in the third period. With the power play winding Ben Copeland skated into the WMU zone and centered the puck to Middendorf in the left circle and he fired it into the net for the game-winner.
The Broncos had some chances late, including missing an open net from just to the left of the crease. WMU also pulled Gorsuch for the extra attacker but were unable to get anything else past CC goalie Alex Leclerc, who made a game-high 29 saves.
The Broncos outshot the Tigers 30-26 on the night. WMU was held scoreless on three power plays, while Colorado College finished 1-for-4.
