KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan gymnastics team defeated Eastern Michigan 194.650 to 193.950 Sunday on Senior Day at University Arena.
The Broncos had the top individual finisher in three events and two of the top three scores in three events.
Western Michigan started the meet off with a solid 48.750 on the vault and scored a season-high 49.050 on the uneven bars in the second rotation. The 49.050 also stands as the sixth best bars team score in school history. WMU had four routines 9.800 or better, with junior
Amelia Mohler winning the event with a season-high 9.900. Sophomore Alexis Oliver scored a 9.825, while classmates
Stacie Harrison and
Morgan Spence each flashed a 9.800.
Senior
Rachael Underwood won the vault with a 9.825 and Spence took third, recording a 9.775.
WMU scored a 48.225 on the balance beam and finished the meet on floor exercise with a 48.725. Freshman
Emily Carless had the Broncos' top finish on beam, taking fourth with a 9.750. Harrison and Underwood went 1-2 on the floor. Harrison won the event with a 9.850 and Underwood was recorded a 9.825 for second place.
Underwood and Spence competed as all-arounders. Underwood took second, totaling a 39.050, just behind Eastern Michigan's Emili Dobroncis with a 39.225. Spence finished third with a 38.725.
Sunday was the final home meet for Underwood and fellow seniors
Rachel Binkley,
Katie Jennings and
Jackie Yates. Jennings led WMU off on vault with a 9.700, which was counted towards the team total. Binkley appeared in the balance beam line up and scored a 9.100.
The Broncos are on the road at Bowling Green on Friday, March 15, a 6:30 p.m. start. The 2019 MAC Championships will be hosted by Northern Illinois on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m.
