KENT, Ohio- Senior gymnast
Rachael Underwood and freshman
Emily Carless were both individual event champions in Western Michigan's meet against Kent State on Friday. Underwood also had the top all-around score. As a team, the Broncos fell to the Flashes, 195.700 to 195.050.
It was Western Michigan's second best total of the season and the third time this year the Broncos scored over 195.
Underwood won the vault with a 9.825, was runner-up on the balance beam with a 9.825 and finished third on the floor exercise, recording a 9.875. Her all-around total of 39.275 is one of top in the Mid-American Conference and tied her season high.
Carless won the balance beam with a 9.875, tying her career high.
Sophomore
Alexis Olivier was runner-up on the uneven bars, tallying a 9.850. Classmate
Morgan Spence had a 9.825 to finish third.Sophomore
Stacie Harrison turned in a pair of fourth-place finishes on vault (9.750) and floor (9.850).
"We're pleased to have put together a strong meet on the road," head coach
Penny Jernigan said. "Morgan and Alexis turned in exceptional bar sets with stuck dismounts. Rachael anchored us on vault with a strong Yurchenko layout full and won the event. We had three standouts on floor. Stacie, Morgan and Rachael were all fantastic. Emily shined on beam. She's only a freshman, but she performed like a seasoned veteran and won the event straight out."
The Broncos are back in action on Tuesday, hosting UIC at 6 p.m. The meet will be aired on ESPN3. Admission to all WMU home meets is free.
