MUNCIE, Ind.-
Amelia Mohler,
Emily Carless and
Morgan Spence all turned in first place finishes in Sunday's Mid-American Conference dual at Ball State. The Cardinals edged the Broncos as a team, outscoring WMU 194.475 to 193.400.
Western Michigan started off the meet strong and had three of the top four scores on the uneven bars. Mohler won the event with a 9.850, followed by Spence in second with a 9.825.
Stacie Harrison tied for third, recording a 9.800.
"As a team we did a great job on bars today with a season-high score of 48.950," said WMU head coach
Penny Jernigan. "Amelia and Morgan were standouts finishing 1-2. Freshman
Carissa Ludwig stepped in for
Rachael Underwood this week and she hit her routine like a seasoned competitor. The rest of the bars team hit too."
Carless tied for first on the balance beam with a personal-best 9.875, while
Taylor Buis placed third with a 9.800.
"Emily competed with such confidence and it was awesome to see her get rewarded for it and tie for first," Jernigan said.
Spence won the all-around title, totaling a 38.925. In addition to finishing runner-up on bars, she also placed second on the floor exercise with a 9.775 and fourth on beam with a 9.750.
"Morgan also turned in another strong floor routine this week tying for second place," Jernigan added. "We had lots of newcomers on every event. They stepped up to the challenge and the experience was valuable for them all."
Western Michigan is on the road again next week, traveling to Eastern Michigan for a 6 p.m. meet.
