DALLAS – It was a banner day for the Western Michigan hockey program as three players were selected on the second day of the 2018 NHL Drat in Dallas on Saturday.
Mattias Samuelson, Paul Cotter and Hugh McGing all heard their names called during the second day of the draft.
The day started off with Samuelsson, an incoming freshman, becoming the second-highest draft pick in WMU hockey history. The 6-foot-4 defenseman was selected as the first pick of the second round, 32nd overall, by the Buffalo Sabres. Read more about Samuelson here.
Later in the afternoon Cotter, another incoming freshman, was selected 115th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in the fourth round. Cotter, a 6-foot left-shot center, comes to WMU this season after one season with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. The Canton, Mich., native posted 39 points on 18 goals and 21 assists in his first season in the league. Cotter, like Samuelsson, was recently named to the roster for Team USA's 2018 World Junior Showcase in a bid to make USA's roster for the 2018 World Junior Championships.
The following round saw McGing hear his name called, being selected 138th overall by the St. Louis Blues. In two seasons with the Broncos McGing has posted 52 points on 17 goals and 35 assists in just 75 games. McGing enters his junior season on the back of a career-best year, totaling 30 points on nine goals and 21 assists during the 2017-18 campaign.
The three draft picks are the most under current head coach Andy Murray, who now has seen 10 Broncos drafted during his eight-year tenure with the program.
