LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up the regular season, traveling to the Toledo Collegiate Invitational and the Kentucky Relays over the weekend.
Overt in Toledo, freshman thrower Abena Atuobi had the highest finish among any Bronco thrower, taking fifth overall in the shot put with a distance of 43' 0.50" (13.12 meters). Senior Savannah Dugan made the top eight, taking eighth place with a distance of 42' 2.25" (12.86m).
Senior Claire Gilbert finished in sixth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:46.56, while freshman Juliane Sormain took third overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.82.
Over at the University of Kentucky WMU had several finishes in the top three, including wins in the 100-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay. The young 4x100 squad of freshman Diamond Mitchell, sophomore Madison Meredith, sophomore Alex Bryant and freshman Ashley Worford combined for a time of 46.96 seconds to claim the win. Worford also took third overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.77 seconds, but was bested by teammate Davonne Bolden. Bolden, a senior, took second overall with a time of 56.74 seconds.
Redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Collins won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.20 seconds. She also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 36' 0.25" (10.98m) and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 18' 5.25" (5.62m).
The Broncos had five finishers in the top eight of the 200-meter dash, led by Worford's third place finish with a time of 25.37 seconds. Bolden took fourth at 25.42, sophomore Erin Dowd took fifth at 25.45, Meredith finished in seventh at 25.75 and Bryant claimed eighth at 25.95.
WMU wrapped up the competition with a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Dowd, Bryant, Clare Lycan and Taylor Fender combined for a time of 4:07.84.
Up next is the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships at Buffalo, beginning on Thursday. Entries will be made available on Tuesday.
