INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Western Michigan track and field team got off to a fast start at the Hoosier Horsepower Classic, producing multiple personal and season-best marks on the first day of competition.
Despite it being the last event of the day, the 200-meter dash crew stole the show.
Soniya Jones posted the fourth best time in program history, securing a 24.46. The time is top-75 in Division I.
Jade Celestine wasn't too far behind her, notching a time of 26.40.
The 60-meter hurdles crew had a strong day, as
Sandra Ferrari,
Mabinty Kebe and Celestine all qualified for tomorrow finals. Ferrari crossed the finish line in first with a time of 8.67, while Kebe was right behind her in second with a time of 8.69. Celestine was eighth earning a season-best 8.89.
Ferrari also performed well in the long jump, claiming second in the invite section of the event. She had a top leap of 5.98 meters, which helped her move into the top 50 in Division I so far this season.
Layla Wallace (5.52 meters) and
Anichka Malachi (5.41 meters) competed in the open section of the long jump. Wallace earned a PR, while Malachi posted a season-best jump.
Later in the day,
Lara Machado Pereira and
Kaelin Hughes finished top 12 in the 3K. Machado Pereira notched a personal-best time of 10:05.58, while Hughes went over the line in 10:06.84.
The final two events of the night featured
Laurie-Ann Desormes and
Sierra Sommers. Desormes performed well in the 60-meter dash, securing a time of 7.77. Sommers then posted a mark of 13.79 meters in the weight throw.
