KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team continues its indoor season this weekend at the Hoosier Horsepower Classic. The Broncos will compete against some of the top teams in the Midwest, including Illinois, Butler and Dayton.
AVA'S BIG DAY
Sophomore distance runner
Ava Kurczewski had a tremendous season opener last weekend at the Wolverine Invitational, securing a time of 2:13.53 in the 800. That was good for third in the event and moved her into one of the top spots in the nation.
Entering this weekend's action, Kurczewski's time is second in the MAC, eighth in the Great Lakes Region and 41st in Division I. The White Lake, Mich. native has a PR 800 time of 2:13.22.
SUPER SONIYA
In her final year with the program,
Soniya Jones has started to make her presence felt, as she claimed second in the 60-meter dash at the Wolverine Invitational this past weekend. She crossed the finish line in a time of 7.57, which puts her among the fastest runners in the region.
As it stands right now, Jones has the third best time in the MAC and the 14th best time in the Great Lakes Region. Jones still has more to give, as her current PR in the event is 7.42.
AMONG THE BEST IN THE MAC
Along with Kurczewski and Jones, Western Michigan has some of the top athletes in the conference so far this season. Entering this weekend, the Broncos have 10 athletes with top-10 times/marks in the conference.
The mile group has been on top of their game early on, as
Kaelin Hughes (sixth) and
Lillian Zelasko (ninth) are both in the top 10.
Sandra Ferrari has also been strong thus far, holding the third best 60-meter hurdles time in the league. The 4x400 relay team of
Rebekah Asselin,
Joy Evans, Kurczewski and
Emma Henkel is seventh in the league so far this season.
Along with that,
Laurine Elisa Marimon is sixth in the long jump, while also being fourth in the triple jump. Throws wise,
