Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Despite Western Michigan rattling off 13 unanswered points including 10 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos were unable to complete the comeback in a 14-13 loss to Akron on Sunday afternoon inside Waldo Stadium. WMU's record drops to 4-3 and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play.
The loss snaps WMU's nine game win streak at home as it's the first loss inside Waldo Stadium since falling to Bowling Green on Nov. 11, 2015. The nine game home unbeaten streak was tied for the fifth longest in the FBS. It was also the Broncos' first MAC loss since a 27-19 defeat at Northern Illinois on Nov. 18, 2015, ending a 12-game winning streak against conference opponents.Â
WMU nearly doubled the total yardage of Akron, 426-215 and outrushed the Zips, 244 to 82. The Broncos were unable to convert in the red-zone going 1-for-4 while also having six penalties for 62 yards. Two missed field goals and an early interception that allowed Akron to take a 7-0 lead also proved costly.
For the 18th time in his career senior running back
Jarvion Franklin rushed for over 100 yards, finishing the day with 31 carries for 130 yards. Franklin is 43 yards away from breaking Robert Sanford's school record for most career rushing yards. The Tinley Park, Ill., native is also two touchdowns away from the breaking the WMU record for most career touchdowns.Â
Sophomore
D'Wayne Eskridge was a primary target in the Bronco passing attack against the Zips, hauling in seven receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown. Redshirt sophomore
Keishawn Watson recorded six catches for 54 yards as five different receivers had at least one reception. Quarterback John Wassink went 17-of-29 for 182 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Defensively,
Davontae Ginwright led the team with nine tackles (five solo) while senior linebacker
Robert Spillane had eight tackles and the led the Broncos with two tackles for loss. Senior
Asantay Brown registered his first interception of the season and fourth of his career early in the fourth quarter.

The contest was the first MAC regular season game played on Sunday since 2006 as lightning and extreme flooding in the Kalamazoo area forced the postponement from Saturday.
Akron raced out to a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter before the Broncos got on the board with a career-long 49-yard field goal by freshman
Josh Grant. At the half, the Broncos trailed 14-3 despite outgaining Akron, 210-147. It was the first time WMU trailed at the half since Nov. 11, 2016 at Kent State.Â
After a scoreless third quarter, Brown picked off Akron's Thomas Woodson early in the fourth that led to a 50-yard touchdown pass from Wassink to Eskridge six plays later. Â
WMU's defense forced a three and out on the next possession and the offense capitalized with a 10 play, 47-yard drive that resulted in a 35-yard field goal by Grant to cut the Akron lead to one with three minutes to play.Â
The Broncos got the ball back with just under a minute to play and made it to Akron territory before a dropped pass and a sack ended the game. Â Â
With the win, Akron improved to 4-3 overall and lead the MAC East with a 3-0 record.
Western Michigan heads to Eastern Michigan Saturday, Oct. 21 for a 3 p.m. kickoff against the Eagles (2-4, 0-2 MAC). The game will be carried on ESPN3.
