Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan baseball team had a late comeback Saturday night at Miami, but ultimately fell 11-6 at Hayden Park to setup a rubber match tomorrow with the RedHawks at 1 p.m.

The Broncos fall to 14-27 overall and 7-10 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while RedHawks improved to 22-23 and 11-6 in the MAC.

Miami scored eight unanswered runs before the Broncos were able to get on the scoreboard. The RedHawks plated four runs in the top of the first inning that included two home runs, one being a three-run shot to center field. Miami added a run in the bottom of the third, two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 8-0 Miami.

WMU's offense came alive in the top of the seventh inning, as the team batted around and scored six runs off three hits and some help from the RedHawks pitching staff to make it 8-6. Four of the first five batters reached base, as senior Hunter Prince led the inning off and was hit by a pitch and freshman Jesse Forestell hit a single to left center field to put two men on. After an infield fly, junior Steve Pastora drew a walk to load the bases for the dangerous Evan Nelson, who split the gap in right center field for a three-run triple to make it 6-3. The Redhawks forced a popout to get the second out of the inning, but WMU drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and put the pressure on Miami. Junior Grant Miller came up with a clutch three-run double to left field to make it 8-6 Miami.

Miami got a big three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give themselves some breathing room to end the game.

Miller finished 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI and Nelson went 1-for-3 with a run, a triple and three RBI. Forestell went 2-for-4 with a run and freshman Connor Smith went 1-for-3 with a run.
