KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Thanks to the team winning its fourth straight Mid-American Conference (MAC) series in a row, the Western Michigan baseball team swept the weekly MAC awards as junior LHP Keegan Akin was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week and senior 1B Hunter Prince won MAC West Player of the Week.
Akin, a Midland, Mich. native, continued his phenomenal junior campaign with his second complete game shutout of the season. Akin tossed all 9.0 innings in Friday's game allowing just five hits and no walks while striking out eight batters. He retired 15 straight batters in the middle innings. Akin set the single season strikeout record on Friday, passing Pat Misch's record of 99 that stood for 15 years. He already has 107 strikeouts this season, which is good for second in the MAC currently. He entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in the nation in K's.
Prince, a Grand Rapids, Mich. native, had a weekend to remember in the final home series of his career. The senior helped lead the team to its fourth straight MAC series win in a row while leading the Broncos in almost all of the major offensive categories. He led the team in batting average (.421), hits (8), doubles (3), triples (1), total bases (13) and slugging percentage (.684). He had three multiple hit games against Ohio over the weekend, including a 3-for-6 performance on Saturday where he recorded his first career triple and finished a home run shy of the cycle.
