Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan baseball team honored its five seniors Sunday afternoon against Ohio at Hyames Field, but the Bobcats spoiled the Broncos final home game of the season with a 7-5 win over WMU to avoid the sweep.
The Broncos fall to 17-29 overall and 10-11 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), but have won their last four MAC series as they won games one and two this weekend. The Bobcats improved to 22-27 overall and 7-14 in the MAC, but were eliminated from the MAC Tournament field as Central Michigan defeated Miami earlier in the day. The five seniors honored were Drew Farmer, Pat Haynes, Mitchell Ho, Hunter Prince and Derek Schneider.
Same as yesterday's ball game, the Bobcats jumped out to an early in the top of the first inning, this time scoring one run off a walk, a hit and the help of a WMU error.
The Broncos scored the equalizer in the bottom of the third inning with a run to make it 1-1. Senior Mitchell Ho led off with a walk, junior Steve Pastora and Farmer singled down the right field line to load the bases. Junior Nick Vogelmeier hit into a double-play to score Ho and tie the game.
The Bobcats added another run in the top of the fourth inning with some luck. Senior Derek Schneider struck out a batter with two outs and a runner on third, but the ball got away and a run scored to make it 2-1 Ohio. Ohio got a big two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 4-1.
The Broncos cut into the lead with some help in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out Bobcat error. Freshman Connor Smith hit a soft ground ball to the second baseman, who missed the pitcher covering first base and it allowed Farmer to come around and score and make it 4-2 Ohio.
The Bobcats got a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to make it 5-2. In the top of the ninth inning with two men on, a high pop out was hit to right field and the Bronco right fielder lost it in the sun and both runners came in to score to put Ohio up 7-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, WMU was able to load the bases with no outs and threaten the Bobcats lead. Miller laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Farmer and make it 7-3 Ohio. Prince hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score another run to make it 7-4 and freshman Jesse Forestell hit into a second fielder's choice to score the third run of the inning and make it 7-5. WMU did bring the tying and winning runs to the plate in the inning.
WMU finishes out the regular season with a three-game series at rival Central Michigan next weekend. The first game of the series is on Thursday, May 19 at 3 p.m. Friday's game will be at 3 p.m. and Saturday's game will start at 2 p.m. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUBaseball for all updates about the team!
