Baseball Drops Game Three at Toledo; Pounds Out 14 Hits

Box Score

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan baseball team fell 11-3 at the hands of Toledo Sunday afternoon on the road. WMU pounded out 14 hits and had at least one hit in every inning except the fourth.

The Broncos fall to 13-26 overall and 6-9 in the MAC and have now won their past two MAC series. The Rockets, who avoided the sweep today, improve to 10-34 overall and 5-10 in the MAC.

WMU started out quick with a run in the top of the first inning, but were then held scoreless from the second inning through the seventh inning. In the top of the first, Nick Vogelmeier singled through the left side and freshman Connor Smith, who went 5-for-6 in yesterday's game, sacrificed Vogelmeier over to second base. Grant Miller singled to shortstop and stole second, helping Vogelmeier come around to score on a throwing error by the Rocket catcher.

Toledo then was able to rattle off 11 runs unanswered including a big four-run seventh inning. The Rockets grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the bottom of the second inning.

It took until the top of the eighth inning for the Broncos where they scored one run on a pair of hits and a walk. Freshman Jimmy Roche led the inning off with a pinch-hit single to left field and junior Alex Goodwin followed that with a double to left field. Later in the inning, senior Mitchell Ho hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Roche.

The Broncos added another run in the top of the ninth inning with the help of a Toledo error. Senior Drew Farmer led the inning off with a walk and Miller reached on a throwing error by the second baseman. Roche came up and hit an RBI groundout to second base to score Farmer.

Four Broncos had multi-hit performances against the Rockets. Freshman Nate Grys and Smith each went 2-for-3 while Vogelmeier and Miller each went 2-for-5. Senior Hunter Prince, junior Steve Pastora, freshman Jesse Forestell, Roche and Goodwin all had hits as well.

WMU used six pitchers in the game as senior Pat Haynes suffered the loss. Sophomore Tanner Allison threw a scoreless eighth inning and senior Derek Schneider pitched 4.0 innings in relief.

The Broncos have some midweek action as Oakland will come to Hyames Field on Wednesday, May 4 with game time scheduled for 3 p.m. WMU heads to Miami for a three-game series from Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUBaseball for all updates about the team!
