Box Score KENT, Ohio – In the rubber match of the series, the Western Michigan baseball fell on the road to Kent State 13-2 at Schoonover Field Sunday afternoon as freshman Nate Grys had a career day for the Broncos.
The Broncos fall to 8-17 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while KSU improved to 19-8 and 4-2 in the MAC.
The Golden Flashes started out hot on offense, plating a run in the first and second innings to go up 2-0 before exploding for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. WMU added a run in the top of the fourth inning off a pair of hits by senior Hunter Prince and Grys. Prince led the inning off with a single to left center field and came around to score on Grys' two-out double to left center field, the first RBI of his young career.
In the Golden Flashes big fourth inning, they had seven hits (all singles) and were helped by three walks issued by the Bronco pitching staff.
The Broncos added another run in top of the seventh inning when Grys' jacked a solo home run to left center field, the first home run of his career. The Broncos had the bases loaded in the inning, as Conner Henderson walked, Connor Smith singled and Grant Miller reached on a throwing error, but WMU couldn't get a rally going against the tough Golden Flashes pitching staff.
Grys finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI and Jesse Forestell and Steve Pastora each added a double. Senior Drew Farmer, Smith, Prince and junior Alex Goodwin all added a hit in the contest. Throughout the series, five Broncos hit .333 in Prince, Forestell, Smith, Nick Vogelmeier and Evan Nelson. WMU did not commit an error in this game, putting its impressive fielding percentage at .988.
