KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team set a program record with seven selections for the NCAA Regionals on April 2 at the University of Iowa. Earning spots outright were Anna Corbett (All-Around), Kelsey Hood (All-Around), Jessi Buis (Vault), Jessie Peszek (Bars and Beam), Jessica Juncaj (Bars) and Rachael Underwood (Beam and Floor). Audry Merritt was selected as an alternate for the floor.
“It's outstanding,” head coach Penny Jernigan said. “We have been moving the program in this direction the last three years, increasing the number of athletes we have at Regionals every year with the ultimate goal of qualifying the whole team. To have seven student-athletes that are moving on is a testimony to that we're going in the right direction.”
The record number of selections comes a year after the Broncos previously had four compete in 2015. Repeat selections for WMU are Buis, Corbett, Hood and Peszek. This will mark Buis' third trip to regionals after earning trips in 2014 and 2015. The other three repeat selections made their first trips a year ago. First-time competitors at regionals will be Juncaj, Underwood and Merritt.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Fort Worth, Texas, April 15-16.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
