Box Score YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped a wild 70-66 double-overtime game to Mid-American Conference (MAC) West rival Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon with the game coming down to the final seconds.
The Broncos fall to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the MAC while the Eagles improve to 14-8 and 5-6 in the MAC while snapping a short three-game losing streak. This was the first overtime game for WMU since an 86-75 overtime win over Detroit on Jan. 22, 2014.
Junior Meredith Shipman hit a deep contested 3-pointer as the time expired to send it to the first overtime. Shipman missed a 3-pointer with :20 to play in regulation earlier, but the Eagles went down for a layup and missed it giving the Broncos the ball with 1.6 seconds to play and setting up Shipman for her buzzer-beating shot.
At the end of the first overtime, the Broncos led 57-55 under :05 to play. The Eagles took a contested jumper and Phillis Webb grabbed the offensive rebound and finished a layup as time expired to send it to the second overtime.
In the second overtime, Cha Sweeney connected on a 3-point jumper with 3:27 to play to give the Eagles a 60-59 lead they would not surrender. The Broncos brought it within two points at the end, but Sweeney went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to ice the game.
The Eagles opened the game on a 10-2 run and took a 15-10 lead after one quarter of play. The eight point lead was the highest of the game by either team. The Broncos battled back to make it 26-23 at the half. In the first half, WMU shot 33.3-percent while the Eagles shot 34.3-percent and led the entire half.
The third quarter was back-and-forth, featuring five lead changes and six times where the game was tied. The Eagles owned a 40-38 lead heading into the final quarter.
Individually, the Broncos put up some big-time stats. Senior Miracle Woods led all scorers with 28 points, a season-high for her. Senior Jessica Jessing just missed a double-double after she finished with nine points and a career-high 18 rebounds, which was also a season-high for anybody on WMU. Senior Alex Morton finished with a career-high 10 assists, just barely missing her first career double-double with eights. Shipman finished with 11 points and three steals while freshman Breanna Mobley finished with four points and nine rebounds.
Woods took over third place on the all-time blocks list at WMU with 116, passing Kristin Koetsier and Dora Kalmer-Nagy.
As a team, the Broncos shot 37.9-percent while the Eagles shot 36.5-percent. WMU won the rebounding battle 54-43 and had 17 assists while the Eagles had 10. The Broncos went 6-for-21 from beyond the arc, with Shipman hitting three and Morton hitting two.
WMU returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 on the road at Bowling Green with game time slated for 7 p.m.
