KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped a 73-61 contest against Mid-American Conference (MAC) West leader Central Michigan Saturday afternoon at University Arena.
The Broncos fall to 15-13 overall and 7-9 in the MAC while the Chippewas improve to 19-8 and 13-3 in the MAC.
Freshman Breanna Mobley continued her amazing hot streak as she led the team with 20 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Mobley has now had a double-double in three of the past four games and is averaging 17.0 points and 12.8 rebounds a game. She went 10-for-13 from the free throw line and 5-for-11 from field goals.
"(Mobley) just doesn't stop, she is so relentless out there," Head coach Shane Clipfell said. "She had 16 rebounds and I bet half of them shouldn't have been hers. It's all effort. It's nothing more than effort and she has been doing that for five straight games now. I'm glad we have that kid on our team."
Both teams offense started out hot, as they each converted on their first four field goals and the game was even at 21-21 to end the first quarter. The Chippewas took an eight point lead at the 5:22 mark of the second quarter, but the Broncos fought back and ended the half on a 9-2 run to tie it at 35-35 at halftime. Junior Meredith Shipman connected on a 3-pointer to end the half and swing the momentum in the Broncos favor.
To start the second half, CMU came out on fire hitting five straight 3-pointers in a less than 3:00 minute span. CMU led by as many as 14 in the third quarter, but the Broncos ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to make it 56-49 going into the final quarter. In the fourth, sophomore Alexis Parks hit a layup to kick things off and bring the Broncos with five points, but the Chippewas soon pushed their lead back to double-digits and stayed ahead throughout.
WMU finished 20-for-62 (32.3-percent) from the floor and 7-for-30 (23.3-percent) in the second half while CMU shot 26-for-52 (50-percent). The Chippewas won the rebounding battle 37-34 but the Broncos had six more offensive rebounds.
Individually, Mobley led the team in points and rebounds while senior Alex Morton finished with 13 points and a team-high three assists and Shipman added 12 points. Parks also added nine in her first career start.
Freshman Presley Hudson led the way for CMU with 17 points while Reyna Frost finished with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Seven players scored over seven points for CMU.
WMU returns to action as it hosts Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, March 2 in the final home game of the season and senior night for the Broncos. Seniors Jessica Jessing, Alex Morton and Deborah Meeks will be honored.
