Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team fell at home to Mid-American Conference (MAC) West foe Northern Illinois 80-70 despite a huge game from freshman Breanna Mobley.
The Broncos drop to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in the MAC while the Huskies improve to 11-15 overall and 4-11 in the MAC.
Mobley finished with a career-high 26 points and a career-high 13 rebounds tallying her third career double-double, all of which have come in the past four games. She shot the ball extremely efficiently, going 7-for-9 from the floor and 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. 12 made free throws was an individual season-high for WMU, shattering the old high of eight.
WMU shot 36-4-percent (24-of-66) from the floor while the Huskies finished at 45.6-percent (26-for-57). The Broncos won the rebounding battle 39-37 and also had six more offensive rebounds. WMU finished with eight more assists and two less turnovers as well.
NIU led for nearly the entire the first quarter, taking a 20-13 leading into the second. The Broncos were able to tie the game once in the second on a Meredith Shipman 3-pointer, but they never took the lead. In the third quarter, the teams traded the lead back-and-forth to start, but the Huskies were able to take a lead with 3:08 to play in the quarter and never trailed again. The Broncos had their highest lead with 5:57 to play in the third after a pair of Shipman free throws. NIU outscored WMU 30-23 in the final quarter.
Mobley led the team in points and rebounds while senior Jessica Jessing finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior Alex Morton finished with 14 points and four assists. Senior Deborah Meeks led the team with six assists.
Junior Ally Lehman had a monster game for the Huskies, scoring 41 points, 29 of which came in the second half, and led the team with 12 rebounds. She shot 12-for-19 from the floor and 15-for-16 from the free-throw line. Courtney Woods finished with a double-double scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
WMU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 27 as rival Central Michigan comes to town with game time scheduled for 2 p.m. at University Arena.
