Keegan Akin Named MAC West Pitcher of the Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Junior Keegan Akin on the Western Michigan baseball team was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Pitcher of the Week the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Akin was as dominant as a pitcher can be on opening day against Georgia State. The junior threw six shutout innings allowing just four hits and walked nobody. He struck out 11 batters, including the first five Panthers he faced in order. No runner reached third base against Akin and he never reached any three-ball counts on the batters. Unfortunately, Akin was on an opening day pitch count that limited his innings. After one game, he leads the team in innings, strikeouts, batting average against and is tied for the team lead with a 0.00 ERA.

Akin, a left-handed pitcher from Midland, Mich, was No. 100 on the D1Baseball.com Top Prospect List to being the season making him the second highest rated Mid-American Conference (MAC) prospect and highest rated left-hander from the MAC. Only four of the 12 MAC schools had players named to this prestigous list. Akin has a career record of 10-9 with a 3.88 ERA. In 169.1 innings pitched, he has recorded 137 strikeouts and 76 walks over the past two seasons.

The Broncos return to action this weekend against the a three-game slate starting with Belmont on Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. WMU will also face Middle Tennessee State and Lipscomb at the Mule Mix Classic in Tennessee.
