MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team set two milestones on Sunday, establishing a new season-high on the vault and a new program record on the balance beam in the team's meet at Central Michigan on Sunday. Overall the Broncos scored a 193.750 compared to Central Michigan's 196.125.
Western Michigan struggled in the opening event on bars, before bouncing back nicely to score a 48.850 on vault a season-best in its second event and a 49.175 on the balance beam in the team's final event of the day.
“Bars was a really tough start for us but they refocused and went right back to work on vault,” head coach Penny Jernigan said. “I'm really proud of how they responded. They carried that momentum into floor as well. The beam team turned in a great performance today. Anna Corbett started us off with her best routine of the season and the rest of the line up continued to build on that.”
Jessie Peszek was the standout performer for the Broncos on Sunday with two career-highs. She scored a 9.875 on bars and 9.900 on beam. Her score of 9.900 is the third-highest total on beam in program history. The 9.875 was good for second place on beam while the 9.900 won her the beam event for the first time this season.
“Jessie Peszek was on fire today,” Jernigan said. “She was having fun out there and it showed in her performances on every event.”
In addition to her beam routine, in which she scored a season-high 9.825, Corbett also captured her sixth vault title of the season with a score of 9.825.
The Broncos have wrapped up MAC play and will continue on the road for two more meets, beginning next Sunday at Illinois State. Meet time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
