Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team trailed by 13 points entering the fourth quarter, but the Broncos fought back and completed the huge comeback by beating Akron 69-65 Saturday afternoon at University Arena in the annual Play 4Kay game. Head coach Shane Clipfell turned his hair pink following the game in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Broncos improve to 15-10 overall and 7-6 in the Mid-American Conference while the Zips drop to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in the MAC. WMU moved to 7-1 against MAC East opponents this season as well as 8-2 at home.
The comeback was sparked by freshman Meredith Miller and sophomore Alexis Parks who combined for 20 points in the second half each scoring 10 a piece, which was a new career-high for both. The Broncos came back to outscore the Zips 27-10 in the fourth quarter on 7-of-11 shooting and 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. In the fourth quarter, the Broncos held the Zips to 2-of-11 shooting and forced eight turnovers with Parks accounting for three steals along the way. The Zips led 55-42 entering the fourth quarter, which tied their highest lead of the game at 13 points.
WMU took its first lead of the game in over two quarters of play at the 2:29 mark in the fourth quarter when senior Alex Morton found Miller on the block for an easy layup to give the Broncos a 62-61 lead. The Zips came back to tie it once more at the 1:30 mark on a free throw attempt, but they would not lead again as junior Meredith Shipman iced the game from the free-throw line going 4-for-4 down the stretch.
Individually, the Broncos were paced by Shipman who finished with 16 points, but it was an all-around effort as five Broncos scored in double-figures. Morton finished with 14 points and six assists while freshman Breanna Mobley came away with her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Parks finished with 10 points and five steals while Miller had 10 points and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
The Zips were led by Hannah Plybon and DiAndra Gibson who each scored 18 points while Alex Ricketts scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Overall, the Broncos shot 39-percent while Akron shot 40-percent. WMU was also outrebounded 39-37, but won the free throw battle going 21-for-29 while the Zips went 10-for-14. The Brown & Gold were 1-10 this season in games where they were trailing heading into the fourth quarter before today's win.
The Broncos will take this next mid-week off, but return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 with a trip to Ball State. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
