Shipman's School Record Not Enough as Broncos Fall 80-73 at Toledo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Junior Meredith Shipman had a historic game, but the Western Michigan women's basketball team ultimately fell to Toledo 80-73 in front of 4,216 fans at Savage Arena. Shipman set a new Western Michigan single-game record with nine 3-pointers as she led all scorers with 31 points shooting 11-for-17 and 9-for-14 from beyond the arc. The record was previously held by Curleta Harris as she connected on eight 3-pointers against Illinois State on Nov. 23, 2002.

The Broncos fall to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while the Rockets improved to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the MAC. The Rockets have also now won seven of the last eight games in Savage Arena and lead the all-time series 52-21.

Along with Shipman having a historic game, senior Alex Morton hit a career milestone with 300 assists as she found Shipman on a 2-on-1 fast break. Morton is the 10th player in WMU history to hit the 300 mark. She also led the team with five assists today.

Western Michigan trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter, which included a scoring drought over 3:00 long. After Shipman went 0-for-3 in the first quarter from three-point range, she went red-hot going 5-for-6 in the second quarter and tying her old career-high with 17 points at the break. In the second quarter, WMU tied it up at 32-32 with a Najee Smith 3-pointer in the corner with 2:37 to go and game stayed tied at the half 37-37 to erase a 10-point deficit in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, the Broncos were outscored 26-22 as Shipman connected on two more 3-pointers to tie the school record. Shipman opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to give the Broncos a 3-point lead, the largest lead they would see all game.

WMU trailed 63-59 heading into the fourth quarter but took a 71-69 lead with 3:23 left on a Smith 3-pointer, her third of game setting a new career-high. The Rockets regained the lead with 1:38 to go on a pair of free throws and didn't trail again.

The Broncos crushed their previous season-high in 3-pointers with 15 against the Rockets, the previous high was seven that they hit three times this season. 15 3-pointers is tied for the second most in school history that was done against Wake Forest on Nov. 25, 2000.

The Rockets scored their final 11 points from the free-throw line as they shot 25-for-30 in the game. The rebounding battle was a tie at 38-38, but WMU grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. The Broncos shot 34.3-percent while the Rockets shot an even 50-percent, which tied for the highest field-goal percentage against the Broncos this season.

Individually, Shipman led all scorers with 31 points while Smith set a new career-high with 10 points. Jessica Jessing finished one point away from a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds and Miracle Woods finished with nine points. Morton added seven and Breanna Mobley had five points and seven rebounds.

For the Rockets, Brenae Harris finished just one assist away from a triple-double with 22 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriot led Toledo with 24 points while Janice Monakana and Ana Capotosto each added 10 points.

The Broncos will stay home for two games next week starting with Kent State on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. and finishing the week off with Miami on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m.
