MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team was in a tough back and forth game against rival Central Michigan Wednesday night, but ultimately fell 53-51 in McGuirk Arena with game coming down to the final seconds.
The Broncos drop to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play while the Chippewas improve to 12-7 and 6-2 in the MAC and extend their winning streak to three games.
The most crucial play came with 2:21 to play in the game as CMU scrambled to get a shot off before the shot clock expired. CMU's Amani Corley, who came into this game 1-for-4 from beyond the arc, connected on a deep 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Chippewas up 53-51 and the Broncos could not recover.
The first half was close throughout, as it featured nine times with the game tied and seven lead changes. The largest lead of the half was five points by WMU with 3:16 left until halftime, unfortunately that happened to be the Broncos last field goal of the half and CMU took a 33-30 lead into the break.
The two teams went even in the third quarter, knotting at 11 points a piece. The Chippewas started the second half out on 1-of-9 shooting. In the fourth quarter, senior Miracle Woods took over on offense scoring all 10 of the Broncos points in the quarter on 5-of-7 shooting.
In total, the game featured 15 lead changes and 11 times the game was tied. CMU came into this game leading the MAC in scoring at 76.5 points and the Broncos help them to a season-low in points. The Chippewas won the rebounding battle 40-34 and outshot the Broncos 40.4-percent to 37.3-percent.
Woods paced the Broncos with 18 points on 9-of-17 shooting while senior Alex Morton added 10 points and senior Jessica Jessing scored nine. Freshman Breanna Mobley leed the team with nine rebounds while sophomore LaTondra Brooks led the team with four steals and tied for the team lead in assists with two.
WMU returns to action on the road at Kent State on Saturday, Jan. 30 with tipoff slated for 2 p.m.
