Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team stayed perfect at home this season with a 73-52 win over Mid-American Conference (MAC) East opponent Kent State Wednesday night at University Arena. The Broncos improved to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the MAC while the Golden Flashes dropped to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the MAC. WMU moved to 6-0 at home this season and 18-2 the last two seasons combined under head coach Shane Clipfell. It was the third consecutive game the defense held its opponent to 25 points or below in the first half.
Senior Miracle Woods had a huge night for the Broncos, going 11-for-11 from the floor to become the only player in WMU history to attempt over 10 shots and make all of them in a single game. She led the team with 23 points and was one of four players to tally five rebounds.
“We have to bring our lunch pale everyday and work," Coach Clipfell said. "The whole conference is good and there is so much parity right now, it is going to come down to winning your home games and winning three or four on the road. Everyday you have to come and play because if you don't you will be beaten.”
The Brown & Gold started out slow going back and forth with KSU in the first 10 minutes which featured four lead changes and two times where the game was tied. After the first, the Broncos led 17-14 shooting 6-for-16 from the floor. The Broncos took over in the second quarter outscoring the Golden Flashes 26-11 with Woods going 6-for-6 with 13 points in the quarter as WMU took a 43-25 lead into the half. 26 points in a quarter is the highest total for the Broncos this season and 43 points at the half is also a season-high.
The Broncos finished out the game outscoring the Golden Flashes 13-12 in the third and 17-15 in the fourth. In the second half alone, the Broncos shot 52.9-percent while holding KSU to 38.7-percent and 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Individually, seniors Alex Morton and Jessica Jessing each scored 10 points while Jessing led the team with six rebounds. Sophomore LaTondra Brooks scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and led the team with four assists. Senior Deborah Meeks scored six points, grabbed five rebounds and added three assists.
The Broncos stay in Kalamazoo this weekend as they host the RedHawks of Miami on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. at University Arena.
