KALAMAZOO -- A late goal by Irene Young helped the Western Michigan women's soccer team to remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference play after a 1-0 win over Toledo at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams were scoreless until the 85th minute when Western Michigan's (5-2-2, 2-0-0 MAC) Candice Uhl streaked down the right flank of the field and placed a perfect cross into the middle of the box. Young jumped and headed it into the net for her third goal of the season, and second game-winning goal this year. 

Both teams fired off 10 shots with Stephanie Heber making four saves to earn the shutout for the second time this weekend. Toledo's Sam Tiongson also made four saves but left the game for the final 5:55 after suffering a leg injury.

"Toledo is a great team. They battled, they work hard, they pressure and they are physical," said head coach Nate Norman. "I was happy with the way we handled it, specially in the second half. As the game wore on I thought we did a great job of competing and getting chances."

Uhl, and specifically her pace, proved to be a problem for the Rockets on the right flank. She was able to fire off several crosses and had three total shots, with two landing on goal.  

"Candice is a great attacking player," Norman added. "She can run at you, she has pace, she can get in behind you with runs and she strikes the ball well. I thought she was constant down that right side and putting in dangerous crosses and eventually got on the end of that one."

The Broncos continue MAC play next weekend, heading on the road at Kent State and Ohio. WMU and KSU kick off on Friday at 4 p.m. and then face OU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
