SUNRISE, Fla., -- Western Michigan sophomore Frederik Tiffels was selected in the sixth round, 167th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday afternoon.
Tiffels completed his first season with the Broncos, playing in 32 games and finishing tied for third on the team in goals scored with 11. He also added 10 assists for 21 points, best among WMU's freshmen class.
"I think Pittsburgh got the steal of the draft and I think they feel the same way," said head coach Andy Murray. "I know they were surprised he was still there. We are really excited for Freddy and it's a great situation for him there."
The Cologne, Germany, native ended up finishing fifth on the team in scoring and tallied the most points by a Bronco freshmen since Chase Balisy (30) and Shane Berschbach (29) in 2010-11. Tiffels was also voted the Suzanne Klop Rookie of the Year by his teammates.
