Box Score JONESBORO, Ark.- Western Michigan played tough, but fell to a very talented Arkansas State team in the first round of the WNIT Wednesday, 61-49, officially marking the end of the 2014-15 season for the Broncos.
Western Michigan finishes the season with a 20-13 overall record, the most wins for the program since the 2002-03 season and just one win shy of the school record of 21. WMU's postseason WNIT appearance was just its fourth ever in school history.
"I am extremely proud of our team and their fight tonight and their fight all year," said WMU head coach Shane Clipfell. "To find out we're in the WNIT at 8:30 p.m. Monday night, leave Kalamazoo less than 12 hours later and have a 13-hour travel day yesterday, I'm extremely proud of our effort.
"Arkansas State is a very good, athletic team. Every time we made a run at them, they were able to stay one step ahead. I think our timing was a little off in the first half and we turned the ball over too much.
"At the end of the day, I can say I am extremely proud to be the coach of this team."
Junior Miracle Woods scored 13 second half points on her way to a team-high 17 points. Woods and Jessica Jessing each had eight rebounds.
Senior Jazmine Windham closed out her career with one of her best games of the season, tying a career high with four three pointers. She checked out with 14 points and six rebounds.
WMU went toe-to-toe with the Sun Belt Conference runners-up and the game didn't get away from the Broncos until late in the second half.
Windham hit a pair of three's early in the second half that helped cut an eight-point (28-20) halftime deficit down to two, 38-36 with 14:27 remaining.
The Broncos still trailed by two, 42-40, with 11:12 left, but watched as the Red Wolves went on a 10-3 run over the next five minutes.
Turnovers hurt Western Michigan in the first half, where the team coughed up the ball 13 times. WMU and AState both shot just around 27 percent in the opening half.
Arkansas State's Aundrea Gamble, the 2015 Sun Belt Player of the Year, led her team with 19 points. Jasmine Hunt recorded a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
The Red Wolves (24-10) advance to the second round of the WNIT and will face the winner of tomorrow night's Middle Tennessee vs. Ball State matchup.
Windham and fellow seniors Marquisha Harris, A.J. Johnson, Michelle O'Brien and Courtney Haley finish with 52 career wins, the most by a senior class since 2007.
