KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell 31 to No. 1 North Dakota in front of 3,353 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
UND netted a goal in each period and WMU's Aidan Muir netted a goal with 33 seconds remaining to spoil the shutout. North Dakota's Zane McIntyre made a game-high 33 saves while Lukas Hafner made 30. WMU was held scoreless on four power plays and UND converted one of its eight chances. Western Michigan outshot North Dakota 34-33.
Mark MacMillan got UND on the board with 2:33 left in the first period after Tucker Poolman found him on a two-on-one and the team's leading goal scorer buried it for his 16th of the season.
Drake Caggiula extended North Dakota's lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 12:49 in the second period. Nick Schmaltz found Caggiula down in front of the net and the junior forward put his back-handed shot into the top of the net for his 14th of the season.
Troy Stetcher pushed the lead to 3-0 in a goal in transition at 11:36 in the third period. Schmaltz picked up a loose puck and found the trailer Stetcher, who fired it from the slot into the net for his second goal of the season.
Muir punched in a rebound on a shot by Kyle Novak at 19:27 with Sheldon Dries also assisting on the goal.
The two teams square off again on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
