KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan's Anthony Avery Jr. hit a jump-shot with one second remaining in regulation to force overtime, but IPFW's Max Landis hit the game-winning three-pointer with 14 seconds left to hand the Broncos their first home loss of the season, 89-86, on Tuesday night at University Arena.

After Avery sent the game into overtime Tucker Haymond scored first to give WMU an 83-81 lead. A pair of free throws by IPFW's Brent Calhoun tied the game up at 83-83. John Konchar gave the Mastodons an 84-83 lead after he split a pair of free throws with 3:01 remaining. Thomas Wilder then took it to the hole and made a layup while getting fouled. The sophomore forward sank the free throw to put the Broncos up 86-84, but it would be the final points for Brown & Gold. Konchar made a layup with 1:19 left to tie the game 86-86 before Landis' game-winning triple.

"It was a whale of game, I was happy with the kids effort, you have to give credit to IPFW they made a lot of plays and a lot of shots when they had to get them," said head coach Steve Hawkins. "Our kids were battling but sometimes we just couldn't get the shots we needed to drop go in."

Haymond paced the WMU (5-6) with 24 points going 8-for-17 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. He also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists. Wilder finished with 19 points and went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Kellen McCormick finished with 15 points, all on three-pointers. Drake LaMont scored eight points and also took down seven rebounds off the bench.

Both teams struggled to get going offensively for most of the first half as IPFW finished the first half shooting 35.7-percent from the field and WMU finished at 43.8-percent. The first half went back and forth with WMU staying on top, never leading by more than eight points. McCormick and Jared Klein hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the first half and give the Broncos a 35-29 lead heading into the locker rooms.

The second half featured nine lead changes and 10 ties. With just over a minute to go and the Broncos trailing 79-75, Haymond converted a layup and Wilder went 2-for-2 from the line to tie it with 45 seconds left. Landis made a layup with 29 seconds left to give IPFW an 81-79 lead before Avery's game-tying shot.

Landis led all scorers with 25 points while Mo Evans and John Konchar each had 16 points and Michael Calder had 10 for IPFW. Evans nearly finished with a triple-double with eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Free throws played a big part of the game, as the Broncos shot 24-for-31 and IPFW went 16-for-26.

WMU travels to Nashville, Tenn. for a match up with Vanderbilt on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 9 p.m. The game can be seen live on the SEC Network and heard on the Bronco Radio Network.
