Men's Hoops Runs Past Marygrove, 101-59

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team saw seven players score in double figures as the Broncos defeated NAIA opponent Marygrove College, 101-59, Saturday afternoon at University Arena.

The victory improved WMU to 5-5 on the season and 4-0 at home. It was the second straight victory for the Broncos, who defeated Northeastern, 87-86, in overtime on Monday.

Western Michigan raced out to a 21-5 lead and led 58-23 at the half. WMU went on to outscore the Mustangs 43-36 in the second half. It was the first time the Broncos hit the 100-plus scoring mark since putting up 109 against Alma on Dec. 4, 2010.

“The game served its purpose," said WMU head coach Steve Hawkins. "It was obvious Marygrove was overmatched and we understand that. When you schedule a game like this, there are good reasons for it. I thought going into it we needed to get the three freshmen some playing time.

“Individually some guys are starting to play very well on the team and our offense has been clicking and I thought it was very important to get some other guys going.”

With the game well in hand, Western Michigan's freshmen, Josh Davis, Seth Dugan and Bryce Moore got to see extended minutes on the floor.

Dugan tallied his first double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Both figures served as team highs for the game as well as career highs. Dugan also dished out a career-high four assists.

Davis and Moore each played 23 minutes with Davis recording 12 points and three rebounds. Moore registered 10 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Western Michigan's upperclassmen also did their part to put Marygrove away. Junior Tucker Haymond had 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting and went 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Junior Kellen McCormick chipped in 12 points and seniors Anthony Avery Jr. and Taylor Perry each had 10 points.

With Moore getting to play additional minutes, sophomore point guard Thomas Wilder got some well deserved rest. He played just 18 minutes, well below his season average of 31.7 mpg. Wilder knocked down two three's and finished with eight points and three assists.

The Brown & Gold shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. WMU outrebounded Marygrove 52-34, grabbing its highest rebounding total of the season. Sophomore post Drake LaMont pulled down a team-best eight boards.

Western Michigan is back in action on Dec. 22, hosting IPFW at 7 p.m. Fans receive a hot dog, box of popcorn, small fountain drink and a game ticket for only $12 as part of a WMU holiday special. The Broncos close out the 2015 calendar year at Vanderbilt on Dec. 30.
