Women's Basketball Rallies Past Detroit in Fourth Quarter, Wins 70-66

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Trailing 55-45 after three quarters, the Western Michigan women's basketball team outscored Detroit 25-11 in the final 10 minutes to pull off a 70-66 fourth quarter comeback victory Saturday.

The win was the Broncos' (6-2 record) fourth in a row and their fifth in the last six games. Both WMU losses this year came on the road at top 25 Big Ten opponents, falling at No. 24 Michigan State on Nov. 15 and at No. 20 Northwestern a week later.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Detroit, which fell to 4-5 on the season. WMU has now won the last three meetings against its in-state counterpart.

The Broncos trailed 37-27 at halftime and still faced an eight-point deficit with 5:52 remaining in the game. Junior Meredith Shipman dialed in for a pair of three's over the next two minutes to spark the WMU rally.

Sophomore LaTondra Brooks had several key plays during the comeback, snagging a steal that led to an Alex Morton fast break basket and scoring a pair of layups on back-to-back possessions, including the one that put WMU ahead for good with 1:14 left. Brooks also ignited the WMU defense, stepping in to take a pair of charges in the final seven minutes.

Senior Miracle Woods was dominate down low, scoring a game-high 27 points, which was also the most points produced by a Bronco this season. With Woods' 27-point performance, she moved into 12th place all-time in career scoring at WMU with 1,236 points. She passed Tiera DeLaHoussaye and Phyllis Cupp. As a team, WMU outscored Detroit in the paint 42-28.

Shipman tied two career highs, scoring 14 points and putting down four three-pointers. All 14 of her points came in the second half.

Sophomore Teagan Reeves recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Morton was just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Both Reeves and Morton's rebounding totals were career highs.

Western Michigan out-rebounded Detroit 47-40 and shot a higher percentage from the field, connecting at 41.8 percent compared to the Titans' 37.9 percent.

Detroit had four players score in double figures - Brianne Cohen (16), Nicole Urbanick (14), Rosanna Reynolds (13) and Brittany Jackson (11).

Western Michigan heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico for three games at the Puerto Rico Classic Dec. 19-21, facing Gardner Webb, No. 9/10 Mississippi State and defending Atlantic Sun champion Florida Gulf Coast. The Broncos close out the 2015 calendar year hosting Ferris State on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
