Broncos Fall at Miami, 2-1

Box Score OXFORD, Ohio -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell at No. 19 Miami, 2-1, at Steve Cady Arena on Friday night.

Collin Olson made a career-high 36 saves for the Broncos (4-3-1, 2-1-0-0 NCHC) but WMU was kept out of the net for in the loss. Paul Stoykewych was the lone goal scorer for the Brown & Gold.

Western Michigan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Stoykewych's first collegiate goal at 4:46 in the first period. Griffen Molino took the puck behind the net and found Stoykewych trailing and the sophomore defenseman fired the puck past Ryan McKay. Kyle Novak also tallied an assist on the goal.

The lead didn't last long as Jack Roslovic netted his sixth goal of the season at 7:57 on the power play to tie it up 1-1. Belpedio fed Roslovic in the right circle and he beat Olson, who couldn't get back in time.

Josh Melnick gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead on the eventual game-winner at 8:39 in the second period. A Bronco turnover created a 3-on-1 rush and Andrew Schmit found Melnick just left of the slot for his third goal of the season.

WMU had several chances in the third period to tie the game. J.T. Osborn found himself alone in the slot but pushed the puck high and to the right. Nolan LaPorte had a chance on a short-handed breakaway but was stoned by McKay.

Western Michigan finished 0-for-2 on the power play, while Miami went 1-for-3. The RedHawks outshot the Broncos 38-24 on the night.

The two teams square off again on Saturday night at 8:05 p.m. The game can be watched live on nchc.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
