Western Michigan Flies by Golden Flashes, 78-55

Box Score KENT, Ohio- Western Michigan used the fast break to get its offense going in the first half and the Broncos rolled to a 78-55 road victory at Kent State Saturday.

With the win Western Michigan improves its record to 5-2 in the Mid-American Conference and 12-6 overall. The Broncos are one win away from tying their total from last season with 11 games left in the regular season.

In a slow start, both teams combined for just eight points over the first 12 minutes of the game. Meredith Shipman woke up the offense with a three-pointer and Western Michigan went on to rattle off 38 points in the first half. WMU led by 16 at intermission, 38-22.

The Broncos really began to pull away in the first half as they pushed the ball up the floor. WMU scored 12 fast break points in the final nine minutes before the half and had 20 points in the paint at the break. Western Michigan continued to add to its lead in the second half, going up by as many as 33 points.

The Bronco bench was big in the win, as forward Marquisha Harris did not make the trip with the flu and junior post Miracle Woods spent much of the game in foul trouble. Sixth man Jazmine Windham played 24 minutes and freshman post Teagan Reeves came off the bench to play 13 minutes. The two combined for eight points and seven rebounds. Reeves had four offensive rebounds.

Freshman LaTondra Brooks provided her usual hustle off the bench as well. She played 15 minutes, had three assists, two steals, two rebounds and scored a layup.

Western Michigan's upperclassmen put together a balanced attack, placing four players in double figures. Junior Alex Morton led the team with 14 points, followed by 13 points from senior A.J. Johnson. Woods scored 12 points in just 15 minutes of action and senior Michelle O'Brien scored 10 points, all in the second half. Woods had a team-high seven rebounds.

Larissa Lurken had a game-high 18 points for the Golden Flashes. CiCi Shannon finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

It was just Western Michigan's eighth road win ever in 24 trips to Kent State in program history. The Broncos also defeated Kent State on the road in 2013, giving WMU back-to-back road wins at Kent State for just the third time ever, and the first such stretch since 1990 & 1991.

The 23-point win was the second-straight dominating victory for Western Michigan, who knocked off Bowling Green by 30 points in Kalamazoo on Wednesday.

The Broncos return home to host Eastern Michigan (10-7, 3-3 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The Eagles defeated Toledo on the road Saturday, 75-61.
