SLYVANIA, Ohio - Western Michigan baseball's comeback against Bowling Green fell short on
Saturday at Mercy Field as the Broncos fell to the Falcons, 3-1. Senior LHP
Steve Laudicina went 7.1 innings, drawing closer to the career lead for innings pitched.
The Falcons (9-16, 3-4 MAC) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when, with two men on and one out, a single through the right side scored the first run of the game. After the batter loaded the bases, BGSU would walk in its second run of the frame. Bowling Green would grab one more run in the top of the third when a SAC fly scored the runner from third, widening the lead to 3-0.
WMU (12-12, 3-4 MAC) registered four hits on the day with junior right fielder
Jared Kujawa, second baseman
Kurt Hoekstra, junior
Andrew Sohn and catcher
Brett Sunde collecting those hits for the Broncos. Senior
Vinnie Booker tied Kyle Galbaith's record for the most hit by pitches in a career (32) when he was plunked in the bottom of the fifth.
The Broncos would scored its lone run in the top of the ninth when Sohn scored from third after a Kujawa grounded out to the first baseman to cut the lead to 3-1, but that would be it as a pop up on the next at-bat would give the Falcons the victory.
The Falcons out hit WMU, 12-4. WMU would left four men on base compared to BGSU who left six on the base path. The Bronco production came mainly from the top of the line-up as the first four hitters collected all of the hits. It is only the second time third-year head coach
Billy Gernon has been defeated by Bowling Green (6-2).
Laudicina pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 10 hits, allowing three runs and striking out five in the loss. He upped his career innings pitched to 284, just 4.2 innings away from passing Billy Morrison (288.2) for the most in a career. Senior RHP
David Brennan came in with strong relief, working 1.2 scoreless innings.
Western Michigan will play in a doubleheader
tomorrow against the Falcons beginning at noon with the second game beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
