Bronco Baseball Falls to Buffalo in Series Finale, 7-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The Western Michigan baseball team fought back from an early deficit, but it wouldn't be enough as the Broncos fell on the road Sunday to Buffalo, 7-3, in Rochester, N.Y.

Buffalo took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run double down the left line by Matt Pollock. A Bronco error in the fourth led to an unearned run for the Bulls and UB tacked on another run in the fifth to put the Broncos in a 4-0 hole.

Western Michigan sophomore second baseman Kurt Hoekstra got the Bronco offense going in the sixth, hitting a one-out triple to right center. Junior shortstop Andrew Sohn came through with an RBI single and sophomore catcher Brett Sunde followed with a base hit through the right side of the infield. Junior right fielder Jared Kujawa stepped to the plate and roped his team-leading seventh triple of the season to bring Western Michigan within a run.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, three consecutive singles and a groundout by Buffalo in the bottom half of the sixth led to two more runs for the Bulls. Buffalo added another run in the eighth to make for a 7-3 final.

Bronco freshman left-handed pitcher Keegan Akin went five innings in the start, allowing six runs (five earned), while striking out five. Senior Monty Porter surrendered just one hit in two and one-third's inning of relief and senior David Brennan did not give up a hit in the final two-thirds.

Western Michigan (13-18, 4-8 MAC) had seven hits in the game, while Buffalo (16-12, 7-4) totaled 11.

Buffalo senior right-handed pitcher Mike Burke went the distance for the Bulls, striking out nine.

Western Michigan returns to action Wednesday, April 16, hosting Akron in non-league play in Avon, Ohio, at All Pro Freight Stadium, home of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
