MINNEAPOLIS -- The Western Michigan hockey season came to an end after the Broncos fell, 5-0, to North Dakota in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Consolation game on Saturday afternoon at the Target Center.
Connor Gaarder gave UND a 2-0 lead with both of his goals coming in the first period. Gaarder redirected a shot by Keaton Thompson into the net just 1:42 into the period to give North Dakota an early 1-0 lead. he second came at 10:27 after punching in a rebound on a shot by Troy Stetcher.
The two teams battled through a scoreless second period with each team landing six shots on goal. Both team's also went 0-for-1 on the power play.
North Dakota extended its lead to 4-0 in the third period first on a goal by Jordan Schmaltz at 11:00 and then on a goal by Rocco Grimmaldi at 13:34. Schmaltz fired a slap shot from the top of the right circle and it hit the cross bar then off of
Frank Slubowski's back and in.
Minutes later Grimmaldi punched in a loose puck for his 14th goal of the season.
Paul LaDue pushed the lead to 6-0 with 5:07 left on a 5-on-3 power play. The freshman defenseman fired the puck from the top of the left circle and into the top-right corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
