LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Western Michigan bats were kept at bay by hard-throwing Cardinal right-hander Kyle Funkhouser as the Broncos dropped game two to No. 7 Louisville, 8-0. Funkhouser was clocked in the mid 90's and struck out a career-best 10 batters in seven shutout innings.
Western Michigan had just two hits and four base runners in the game. Sophomore
Kurt Hoekstra singled in the third and senior
Steve Buglione drove a base hit up the middle in the seventh.
Jared Kujawa drew a pair of walks, one in the fourth and another in the seventh.
Louisville (5-1) took a 2-0 lead on a pair of singles and a double in the first inning. After issuing two walks and loading the bases, junior RHP
Chad Mayle avoided further damage with a groundball double play to end the inning.
Mayle kept the Cardinals' high-powered offense off the board again until the fifth when his day was nearing an end and he began to run into control issues, giving up a run off a walk and three hit batsmen. With one away and the bases loaded, WMU worked its way out of a tricky spot again as sophomore RHP
Pat Haynes took over in relief and closed the door with another double play ball.
A pair of walks and two errors didn't do the Broncos any favors in the sixth and the Cardinals were able to put the game out of reach, scoring five runs - only one of which was earned.
Mayle was charged with the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the season after allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Funkhouser (1-0) picked up the win, allowing no runs, two hits and the two walks over 7.0 innings.
Western Michigan (0-5) will look to head home on a winning note Sunday, facing the Cardinals in game three of the series at Patterson Stadium at 1 p.m.
