KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan picked up its sixth Mid-American Conference victory of the season and 10th win overall, defeating Ohio, 71-64, Wednesday night at University Arena. Coming off the bench, junior
Marquisha Harris led three Broncos in double figures with a team-high 20 points.
WMU switched up its starting five to counter an Ohio zone defense which tripped up the Broncos in a 70-53 loss five weeks ago in Athens. Point guard
Alex Morton and forward
Miracle Woods remained in the lineup but this time around, head coach
Shane Clipfell gave the nod to usual reserves
Julia Henson,
Jessica Jessing and
Michelle O'Brien in place of
A.J. Johnson,
Jazmine Windham and Harris.
The move paid off as WMU was able to create better chances for its offense and for just the second conference game this season, outrebounded its opponent, dominating the boards in a 48-36 fashion.
“I said to our team that I liked the team that went out there and played tonight,” Clipfell said. “We shook up the line-up and had a great response to that collectively. I'm very happy to say that we not only dominated the boards but we also rebounded defensively. If you don't rebound you don't play, and that's basically the message that we sent the team.”
WMU's ability to rebound helped make up for other areas where the team at times struggled. Normally a 70 percent mark from the free throw line, the Broncos missed 20 freebies, going 22-for-42 at the stripe. WMU did lock it in when it mattered however, making 8 of its final 12.
The Broncos played from behind most of the first half and trailed 25-18 with 3:37 left before the break, but closed out the half with a 12-2 run to enjoy a 30-27 lead heading into the locker room. Henson put the Brown & Gold over the hump, nailing a deep three off a designed play as the halftime horn sounded.
From there, the Broncos never trailed again, although they did have to hold off the Bobcats, who tied the game once at 50-all with 7:48 remaining.
Harris had 11 points at halftime, but got more help from her teammates as things started to open up for WMU. After being held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, Woods tallied all of her 13 points in the second half. Morton also dished out five of her career-high seven assists in the final frame and the Broncos upped their shooting percentage from 34.6 percent to 41.8 percent.
Harris added seven rebounds to go with her 20 total points. O'Brien led the way on the boards, pulling down 12 while also chipping in eight points. Woods was a rebound short of a double-double with nine and Morton's final stat line read nine points and six rebounds to go along with the seven helpers. Windham finished with 10 points and four caroms.
Kiyanna Black was the biggest thorn in WMU's side, knocking down big three's each time the Broncos threatened to pull away, many of which were heavily contested. She went 7-for-14 from 3-point range and led all scorers with 29 points. Kat Yelle had 10 points, as the pair combined for over half (39) of Ohio's 64 points.
The 10th victory gave WMU double-digit wins for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2007 & 2008. The Broncos also matched their MAC total from last season with five games to go, all against MAC West opponents.
The Broncos (10-14, 6-7 MAC) head to Toledo Sunday for a tough road matchup against the Rockets, who have won their last four straight and sit second in the West with an 8-5 MAC, 13-11 overall record. WMU defeated UT in the first meeting this season on Jan. 18 in Kalamazoo, 78-72.
