OXFORD, Ohio- Five players scored in double figures for Western Michigan and the team shot a blazing 53.8 percent from the floor as the Bronco women's basketball team opened Mid-American Conference play with an 88-78 win at Miami Saturday.
Juniors Michelle O'Brien and Marquisha Harris each tallied double-doubles in the victory. O'Brien had 22 points and 11 rebounds, both of which were game highs, and Harris ended with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Miracle Woods totaled 17 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in her all-around effort. Julia Henson knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points and sophomore point guard Alex Morton scored 10 points for the third straight game, while also dishing out five of the team's 15 assists. Western Michigan had just 12 turnovers in the game, tying a season low.
Miami started the game on a 7-0 run and the Broncos took the lead midway through the first half. WMU used a 12-2 run at the end of the half to hold a 51-37 advantage at halftime.
The RedHawks fought back in the second half however, whittling away a 15-point deficit to as low as three with 5:57 left in the game. With Miami trailing by four and 2:27 remaining, Henson hit a three to push WMU's lead to seven and the Broncos held a steady cushion the rest of the way.
It was the third straight road win for the Broncos (5-7, 1-0 MAC). Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo to host Buffalo, Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: WMU's 51 first half points were the second most scored in a half this season, most was 54 vs. Detroit on Nov. 14 ... O'Brien's double-double was her third this season and sixth of her career ... Harris' double-double was her second of the season and seventh of her career ... freshman Meredith Shipman scored a career-high eight points ... the team made a season-high 26 free throws ... the 53.8 field goal percentage was a season high ... the win against Miami snapped a two-game losing streak against the RedHawks.
