KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Both teams shot over 50 percent in Saturday's Mid-American Conference rivalry showdown but Western Michigan couldn't keep pace with Central Michigan's high-powered offense, falling 113-87. The Chippewas remain unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0 record, while WMU sits second in the MAC West with a 4-3 record.
Sophomore
Miracle Woods did her best to combat CMU, pouring in a career-high 36 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. It was Woods' second consecutive double-double and second game this week with 30-plus points after totaling 31 Wednesday against Miami. The 36 she scored Saturday was five shy of the school record and the most produced by a Bronco since Carrie Moore scored 36 against Akron in 2007.
Woods accounted for nearly one-third of Western Michigan's points and rebounds. Rebounding however was the one area that Central Michigan dominated, collecting 47 boards to WMU's 35. The Chippewas used 20 offensive rebounds to score 35 second chance points, 28 more from the offensive glass than the Broncos.
Western Michigan went toe-to-toe with Central Michigan for the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Chips used a big push at the end of the first half to turn a 41-33 lead with 5:39 to go in the first to a 68-43 halftime advantage. The Broncos kept almost even in the second half, where they were only outscored by one, but couldn't make up any ground.
“I tip my hat to Central Michigan, that is a very good team,” said WMU head coach
Shane Clipfell. “We needed them to play a B or a C game against our A game, but they brought their A-plus game. Not a lot of teams could have beaten them today.”
Central Michigan placed five players in double figures, and was led by Crystal Bradford with 23 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Niki DiGuilio hit 6-for-12 from behind the arc on her way to a team-high 27 points.
Sophomore
Jessica Jessing was the only other Bronco to hit double digits with 12 points.
A.J. Johnson and
Marquisha Harris each had eight. Harris saw limited minutes after drawing a fourth foul with 18:46 remaining in the second half. She also had four assists and
Alex Morton dished out five.
Western Michigan committed 16 turnovers in the game, while CMU kept their miscues to nine. WMU's overall record slips to 8-10, while CMU's improves to 11-8.
The Broncos head to Muncie, Ind., Wednesday to face Ball State at 7 p.m. and return to University Arena next Saturday to host Northern Illinois at 4:30 p.m., following the Bronco men's game against Central Michigan at 2 p.m.
